Founded in 1863, HSS is the oldest orthopedic hospital in the United States, with more than 32,000 surgical procedures performed annually. HSS has been ranked No. 1 for orthopedics for 14 years in a row by U.S. News & World Report.

As a destination for patients all over the world seeking orthopedic care, HSS has an unmatched reputation for providing the highest quality patient experience. From a nursing standpoint, HSS was the first hospital in New York City (NYC) to receive the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence and the first hospital in New York State to be re-designated with nursing’s highest honor four consecutive times.

Being a national leader for orthopedics and joint replacement surgery, HSS has an interdisciplinary pre-operative pathway for our patients undergoing shoulder replacement, involving physical therapists, occupational therapists, and internal medicine physicians. As a shoulder specialist at HSS, Dr. Michael Fu is actively involved in the development and evolution of the shoulder replacement pathways and protocols.

We also recommend that our shoulder replacement patients go through a pre-operative session with our physical therapy team, where they will review what the first days to weeks will be like after surgery, go over any specific areas of concern unique to your condition or home environment, and to demonstrate how to perform activities of daily living in the post-operative period. This pre-operative session is highly rated by our patients, and we try to schedule it on the same day as your pre-operative testing and medical clearance at HSS. There is a virtual option for our patients as well. Please call our office at (212) 606-1991 for assistance with setting this up.

In addition, please review the following HSS guides for shoulder replacement, which includes a comprehensive overview of what the surgical experience will be like, precautions and positions after surgery, rehabilitation exercises, and tips for performing activities of daily living after surgery. These resources are customized specifically to right and left shoulder replacement.
