Dr. Michael Fu is an attending orthopedic surgeon and shoulder specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City (NYC) and New Jersey (NJ). He is also an assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medical College.
As a shoulder surgery and sports medicine specialist, Dr. Fu’s experience across the entire spectrum of shoulder pathology enables comprehensive and longitudinal care for patients with a variety of shoulder conditions. Dr. Fu has extensive experience caring for athletes at all levels, from a young person with shoulder instability to the weekend warrior with a rotator cuff tear. He has been a team physician for the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, DePaul University Blue Demons, and New York City’s PSAL.
In addition to athletic and traumatic shoulder injuries, Dr. Fu also specializes in degenerative shoulder conditions, including rotator cuff tears and shoulder arthritis. He performs multiple types of surgeries, including total shoulder replacement. Dr. Fu's focus and expertise in the shoulder provide patients with a full range of operative treatment options, minimally-invasive arthroscopic shoulder surgery, and open surgery.
Dr. Fu completed his orthopedic surgery residency at HSS, and his sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship training at the Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush program in Chicago. In addition to his training in the United States, Dr. Fu has also trained with European experts in shoulder surgery at the Centre Orthopédique Santy in Lyon, France, and the Nice Shoulder Institute in Nice, France.
Dr. Fu studied chemical engineering as an undergraduate at Columbia University, where he graduated summa cum laude and was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. He was the recipient of the George Vincent Wendell Memorial Medal at graduation, which is awarded by choice of the graduating class and the faculty to the student who best exemplifies character, scholarship and service. Dr. Fu attended medical school at Yale University, where he completed a combined MD and Master of Health Science (MHS) program focused on clinical outcomes research.
Dr. Fu is the Director of Shoulder Research for the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) Sports Medicine Institute (SMI), serves on the Editorial Board of the Arthroscopy journal, and is a peer reviewer for the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, the American Journal of Sports Medicine, and the Bone & Joint Journal. He has authored over one hundred peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters, and has presented his research at national and international meetings. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
